Our Personal Experience:

Is freezing in the desert possible? Absolutely.  I experienced this firsthand as I ventured to Arizona for the first time in early January to chase after mule deer, couse deer, and javelina.  Sleeping in the bed of my truck covered with a camper shell was our saving grace as the temps got into the lower teens at night and the days never topped fifty degrees.  If you are familiar with this “everyone’s hunt” then you know there is a lot of sitting and glassing involved.  I knew I was going to need something that would allow me to stay warm and still have the ability to move as well as dump heat.  I chose our Waypoint Jacket and Pant to cover all my needs.  I knew we would spend a little time hiking to glassing spots where we would sit for hours checking every shadow, tree, and drainage for a shooter buck so I knew I wanted to stay warm or else my hunt would turn miserable in a hurry. I also knew that I needed to have the mobility to draw back on my bow after stalking in close on a shooter.  So, in all, I needed warmth, breathability, and quietness. The Waypoint ended up checking all these boxes for me.  I ended up layering with our Insulator system underneath and merino top/bottom as I am a slender 160.  Me and old man winter don't get along too well.  The highlight of how I layered was that I could open the ventilation ports that the Waypoint System offers while we moved allowing air flow and then shutting them as soon as we stopped to retain my body heat during glassing sessions.  Even though I came home empty-cooler, I enjoyed the hunt and was never miserable thanks to this system.

Selkirk System

The Pnuma Selkirk Jacket has everything you would wish for in a weatherproof hunting jacket. Its waterproof membrane is incredibly breathable and warm without being bulky. Plus, it's soft, flexible, and whisper-quiet even when cold. That means you stay warmer, dryer, and more silent even in the harshest conditions, and that's guaranteed for life.

Overview

Be prepared for anything the elements can throw at you. In extreme weather, comfort is measured by how dry and warm you stay. The hunting industry measures it by Moisture Vapor Transfer (MVT) ratings for waterproofness and breathability. The higher the MVT rating, the drier, and more comfortable you will be. Until now, the highest breathability ratings on the market were between 20,000 and 50,000. The breathability rating of the ultra-thin Porelle Extreme membrane in the Pnuma Selkirk Jacket and Pant checks in at an unstoppable 120,000. Selkirk's super micro-brushed Tricot outer fabric is deadly quiet, protected with 3M DWR for water repellency, and features world-class YKK waterproof zippers. The Pnumagrid fleece lining focused on your core warmth allows you to comfortably layer up or down as conditions demand. To complete the package, added protection from PnumaGuard™ non-slip, wear-resistant overlays on jacket shoulders, elbows, and pant knees will protect your investment for years to come. And that's guaranteed for life.

Our Personal Experience on Selkirk

Selkirk met my expectations and more when chasing whitetail in South Texas.  At first, you’re probably thinking I’m crazy when I bring up Texas and Selkirk in the same sentence.  We had a historic ice storm and snow come through the entire state this past winter while I was finishing up my hunting season.  Not just a dusting of snow and ice either.  It was a storm of epic proportions that took down hundreds of powerlines across the state and left many in the dark for weeks. If you know us Texans, then you know that when we get sleet, most school districts will shut down.  You can imagine how it was with this storm.  The Selkirk System was perfect for chasing whitetail during this winter whiteout. Temperatures were in the high teens, almost an inch of ice covering every surface that was exposed, and it looked like we were chasing whitetail in Canada instead of Texas.  I knew I was going to need something that kept me completely dry and warm.  My first thought? Selkirk of course.

We were going after a buck on our ranch that had slipped our radar all season.  We had seen him sparingly throughout the season and it seemed like he would disappear like a ghost never appearing on cameras.  The only time we would see him was when he wanted us to.  On the day we got into the stand with ice everywhere he was the first deer to appear in the middle of the road that went directly in front of our blind.  I was in shock and had to rub my eyes in disbelief that he was actually standing in front of us. Dark chocolate antlers covered in ice and G2’s at least a foot long with the mass to back his body size.  This is the buck you dream of when you hear the term brush country monster.  At this instance, my heart began to race uncontrollably as I clicked my release on the bow.  From the time I looked down at my arrow to make certain it was knocked and then look back to where he was standing, he had disappeared.  Therefore, this buck has garnered the name “Ghost”. Needless to say and long story short, he made it another season and I am anxiously looking forward to seeing if he appears on any cameras.  Either way, I’m hoping for another cold and nasty day like this so I can claim redemption on this buck with Selkirk in hand.

So, what do you go with?

The Waypoint Hunting Jacket, Pant, and System are mid-weight, wind and water-resistant pieces made of a durable woven softshell material that is deadly quiet. It can withstand light to medium rain and snow and will keep you dry due to the 3M DWR treatment on the shell fabric. In addition, Waypoint has grid fleece insulation lining on the inside, just like the Selkirk All-Weather Hunting Jacket, Pant, Bib, and System. Selkirk is windproof and waterproof because Selkirk’s construction is integrated with the breathable, waterproof Porelle Extreme membrane. All seams of the membrane are heat and tape sealed to prevent the passage of moisture, vapor, and water. Like Waypoint, Selkirk also has a mid-weight grid fleece lining focused on the body core. The outer fabric is a soft and quiet knit micro brushed tricot, almost like a very low nap fleece, and is also treated with 3M DWR for water repellence. The Porelle Extreme has the highest breathability rating of any membrane used in hunting apparel (120,000 g moisture vapor transfer). Being mid-weight suits, Waypoint and Selkirk are designed to put you in complete control of your comfort level, allowing you to layer up or down for optimal comfort depending on hunting conditions, temperature, and exertion level.  You can’t go wrong with either Waypoint or Selkirk Hunting Jacket, Pants, Bibs, and Systems. But if you hunt in wet conditions and/or hunt with high levels of exertion? Selkirk is the suit more than likely the best hunting suit for you.  If you are headed to the tree-stand after a giant whitetail, then Waypoint is going to be the direction you want to head.

Whether you are chasing after booger bottom bucks with a bow or elk during the third rifle season, we have the gear for you here at Pnuma Outdoors.  Even though we are whitetail brand at our roots, we make technical gear that you can carry with you anywhere you go.  We are committed to providing the best performing gear on the market, regardless of weather conditions. So, we tirelessly seek out the most revolutionary fabrics, technology, and patterns, and if we can't find something that meets our expectations, we develop something that will.
